How to get members on your forum. Share any tips and ideas.

Hello all.
Do you have any ideas or tips on how to get more members to join and then actually post on forums? Is there any methods or techniques you have found to be successful? Then this is the thread to share them!
The obvious ones are:
1: Advertise your forum on here, and on other forums advertisement sections and other appropriate places.
2: Tell all of your friends about your forum, and ask them to tell all of their friends and so on.
Option one is fine for getting traffic on your forum, but to you have any tips on how to get some of those 30-50 guests a day to sign up and start posting?
And option two is fine, but only if you have any friends lol.
Since this forum is about promoting and advertising forums, I thought it might be a good idea to start this topic.
